Richard Guzman spent 27 years selling produce in Los Angeles
Richard Guzman, a salesman at Go-Fresh Produce Inc. on the Los Angeles Wholesale Produce Market for the last seven years and a 27-year veteran of the Los Angeles wholesale produce industry, died of a heart attack in a Los Angeles hospital March 12. He was 49.
Born Aug. 5, 1958, in Los Angeles, Mr. Guzman went to work for Tam Produce in Los Angeles, once the area's largest tomato repacking house, in 1981. He remained there until "he came over with us in 2001," said Martin Ulloa, president of Go-Fresh. "He spent his life working in produce. He really only had two jobs: Tam Produce and Go-Fresh."
Mr. Guzman was a valuable member of the team at Go-Fresh, a valuable member of the produce industry, and "a very good guy," said Mr. Ulloa, who had known him since he started working at Tam 27 years ago. "He knew a lot of people. He knew all the big buyers from the chainstores. He was very positive, motivated and was friendly with everybody. Everybody liked him."
Mr. Guzman was "very dedicated to his job," Mr. Ulloa said. "He never used to miss a day of work. In seven years, he never took a vacation."
Mr. Guzman came to work as usual on the morning of March 12, even though he did not feel well. When asked, "Why don't you just stay home?" he replied, "I don't like to miss work." Two hours later, he collapsed and was taken to the hospital where he died within a few minutes, Mr. Ulloa said.
