Sage Fruit's second annual display contest takes flight
For the second year, Yakima, WA-based Sage Fruit Co. and its regional retail partners have seen a significant uptick in their apple sales as the result of Sage's produce department display contest.
Sage President Chuck Sinks said that the contest ran from early January through late February and involved approximately two dozen retail stores in the Upper Midwest.
"We ran the apple display contest to see who could build the most original display while increasing apple sales in their produce departments," Mr. Sinks said. "Hugo's in Grand Forks, North Dakota, won first prize."
Hugo's Produce Director Rick Hogan, who designed and built the "Sage Airlines" plane with Sage apple cartons, said his apple sales were up by 20 percent during the week the display was featured.
"The promotion was a complete success as our customers sold more fruit and brought extra attention to the apple category," said Mr. Sinks.
He went on to say that plans are already in the works for Sage's third annual apple display contest for 2009, but in the meantime, Sage is working on its "Diamond of Fruit" cherry promotion, which will run from June 15 through July 15 this year.
"We're expanding the program to encompass different regions in the country," Mr. Sinks said. As in years past, the promotion will involve the giveaway of diamond earrings to consumers through contests held at participating retail stores across the country.
