In South Carolina, Columbia State Farmers Market to be relocated
COLUMBIA, SC " Hugh Weathers, South Carolina?s commissioner of agriculture, announced that plans are coming together for relocating the Columbia State Farmers Market.
The market has been located on a 50-acre site here on Bluff Road since the fall of 1951. It ranks second in the nation behind the Atlanta market and seventh in the United States and Canada in the volume of produce handled.
The new market will be built on a "total land package of 196 acres," according to Wayne Mack, the department?s director of marketing, although he noted that "some of that is non-useable."
The new site, off Interstate 77, is about five miles from the current one. He estimated that ground could be broken for the new market in about six months.
?The market has served us well at its current location, but the time has come to move to a new location that is more accessible and buyer-friendly," Mr. Weathers said in an April 4 statement. "If all goes well, we anticipate occupying the new space in 24 to 36 months."
Mr. Mack estimated the cost of the new market at between $40 million and $55 million, depending on the exact number of tenants who relocate from the old market to the new one.
?But I think the majority will move," he told The Produce News, adding that the cost will be shared by the state of South Carolina and Richland County.
The formal announcement of the Columbia State Farmers Market?s relocation will be made at the Eastern Produce Council?s dinner meeting Tuesday, April 19 at the Marriott at Glenpointe in Teaneck, NJ. Following a longstanding tradition, the April meeting will be hosted by the South Carolina Department of Agriculture.
