'Broccolini' celebrates a milestone birthday
SALINAS, CA -- One of America's favorite vegetables, "Broccolini" brand baby broccoli, is turning 10 this year, and to celebrate, the vegetable is sponsoring a new festival called Pebble Beach Food & Wine.
Broccolini, a cross between broccoli and Chinese kale, made its debut in 1998 as a new-to-the-world vegetable grown by Mann Packing Co. Inc. in Salinas, CA.
Ten years later, Broccolini is a foodie favorite, featured on menus, food blogs and TV shows across the country. In 2007, supermarket sales topped $5 million, an increase of 6.6 percent over 2006, according to Mann.
"It's been rewarding to see 'Broccolini's popularity grow,", company spokesperson Gina Nucci said in a March 6 statement. "It has developed a cult following and shows that there is always room for a great new vegetable."
Broccolini will be a featured product at Pebble Beach Food & Wine, March 27-30, at the Pebble Beach Resorts in Monterey, CA.
The new epicurean event will bring together more than 50 chefs and more than 200 wineries from around the world for wine-pairing dinners, cooking demonstrations, product tastings and a rare-wine auction and dinner. "Chefs were the first to embrace Broccolini, and most of the chefs attending the event use it in their restaurants," Ms. Nucci said. "We're thrilled to showcase our products and our growing region to these leading culinary professionals."
