Emeril teams with Planet Green and Whole Foods on TV show
Celebrity Chef Emeril Lagasse will host a new television series "Emeril Green" on Planet Green, Discovery Communications' new 24-hour eco-lifestyle television network that will reach more than 50 million U.S. homes.
Planet Green network is set to launch June 4 with a full slate of original series and specials premiering throughout the summer. The "Emeril Green" series is slated for a July launch and will be shot exclusively in a Whole Foods store in Fairfax, VA. A pilot episode was shot during the first week of March, and the show will air at 8 p.m. five days a week.
Mr. Lagasse will phase out his "Emeril Live" on the Food Network in two years, but his show "Essence of Emeril" on the Food Network will continue. Karen Katz, longtime executive producer of "Emeril Live," will produce "Emeril Green."
Eileen O'Neill, president and general manager of Planet Green, said that food "is part of the green movement" and that the network is excited to have "Emeril Green" in its lineup. Planet Green has its own web site at www.planetgreen.com, which will be "tricked out" with broader content on April 17 timed with the annual Earth Day celebration on April 22, Ms. O'Neill said.
The filming will take place during normal business hours, and select shoppers will get a chance to appear on air with Mr. Lagasse. During filming of the show, he will be "solving a problem or challenge or a dilemma for a customer," Ms. O'Neill said.
Sarah Keeney, director of marketing for Whole Foods Market in the mid- Atlantic region, said that Mr. Lagasse would state the customer's challenge, shop with the customer in the store for the ingredients, cook the dish and taste test it. Whole Foods team members also will appear on the show.
The Produce Exchange, based in Livermore, CA, is responsible for product development, sourcing and sales of Emeril's gourmet product line. Sam Jones, president and principal of The Produce Exchange, said that Emeril's product "will be featured on the show" when appropriate. The Produce Exchange is planning a June or July launch of new items and a relaunch of previous items, which mostly will be a repackaging of items. San Juan Bautista-based Pride of San Juan grows many of the items in the "Emeril" line.
