Mango veteran Jimmy Burnette joins JC Tropicals
Produce industry veteran James (Jimmy) Burnette has joined the sales team at JC Tropicals in Homestead, FL, bringing 30 years of experience to the grower-shipper-wholesaler. Mr. Burnette, who officially came on board Feb. 22, will head the company's mango department.
"Jimmy's primary responsibility is to lead our mango division and also to participate in the day-to-day sales process with the rest of our sales team on our complete line of product. He is our mango guy," said Adrian Capote, JC Tropicals' vice president of sales. The company has had a mango program for about 10 years, he noted. "Jimmy is being charged with taking it to next level."
JC Tropicals carries between 50 and 60 items, and about 90 percent of those are tropicals, according to Vice President of Operations Jessie Capote.
"I've done business with JC for 15 years, so this was an opportunity," Mr. Burnette said of his move to the firm from his position as director of East Coast sales for Oxnard, CA-based Freska Produce, one of the larger importers of mangos in the United States.
Prior to his 18 months with Freska, "I had my own company in Miami for 15 years, Imports Unlimited Inc.," Mr. Burnette said. "Mangos were our main line. We were one of the first companies to bring mangos in from Peru, Brazil and Ecuador."
JC Tropicals aims to capitalize on that expertise.
"Where I see a big advantage is education," Adrian Capote said. "There is a big learning curve in the whole industry - that is the biggest challenge. Jimmy can really educate retailers" on positioning and marketing mangos within the produce department.
Another advantage is Mr. Burnette's ability to cross-sell JC Tropicals' other items to his clients, Mr. Capote said.
Mr. Burnette, a native of Alabama, began his career working for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. "That's how I got into the produce business, doing inspections on the New York and Philadelphia markets for seven years," he recalled.
JC Tropicals was incorporated in 1965. Its sales team of seven sells mostly to wholesalers.
Mr. Burnette resides in Weston, FL.
