Save Mart honors 2007 store manager of the year
Debbie Bookil, store manager of FoodMaxx at 1845 Countryside Lane in Turlock, CA, has been named Save Mart Supermarket's manager of the year.
Ms. Bookil was presented with the company's Nicholas J. Tocco Award at Save Mart's annual management appreciation dinner held recently in Modesto, CA. This is the first time in the 14 years of this award that a woman has been the recipient.
The award was created in honor of the late Nicholas J. Tocco, co-founder of Save Mart Supermarkets.
"Debbie represents everything we want our store managers to aspire to be," said Steve Junqueiro, executive vice president of Save Mart. "She executes store merchandising and operations plans with detail, accuracy and excellence. She is very attentive to the needs of her store team and develops their talents. Most importantly, she is tuned into the needs of her customers and delivers service beyond their expectation."
Delivering good service is particularly challenging to achieve in a price- impact store such as FoodMaxx, where keeping costs low is "essential to providing the lowest possible prices to shoppers," Mr. Junqueiro said.
Mr. Junqueiro said that Save Mart's two runners-up -- Larry Rotelli and Kevin Smith -- are seasoned managers with a combined 55 years of service to Save Mart and their communities. First runner-up Mr. Rotelli is manager of the Save Mart at 1453 Goodwin Drive in Ripon, CA, and second runner-up Mr. Smith is manager of the Save Mart store at 1157 N. Willow in Clovis, CA.
"Their commitment to connecting with their employees really shines in the high-quality, attentive service they provide to their customers," Mr. Junqueiro said. "The success of Save Mart Supermarkets rests with the excellence of our store managers and their teams. It is important for the company to recognize that excellence each year."
Ms. Bookil spent many years working in the grocery business before moving into management. With the whole family working in grocery stores, starting at age 16 as a bagger was a logical first job.
She spent almost nine years in conventional stores before making the move to a warehouse format.
At FoodMaxx, Ms. Bookil worked as front-end manager seven years and then spent three years as assistant grocery manager, before being promoted to grocery manager, then gained seven years experience before becoming a store manager.
Ms. Bookil was one of 10 nominees out of the company's 120 managers who made the final selection for Save Mart's 2007 store manager of the year.
Save Mart Supermarkets was founded in 1952 in Modesto. The privately owned company operates 248 stores throughout Northern California and Northern Nevada under the banners of Save Mart, Lucky, S-Mart Foods, and Food Maxx.
