Allen Vangelos named president and CEO of Sun World
The board of managers at Sun World International LLC, which is headquartered in Bakersfield, CA, has named Allen Vangelos, who is a member of the company's board of managers, "to the additional positions of president and chief executive officer on an interim basis." He will oversee all company operations. The announcement was made in a Jan. 18 company press release.
In a telephone interview Jan. 22 with The Produce News, Chris Parker, Sun World's chairman of the board and an employee of Black Diamond Capital Management, which owns Sun World, said, "Allen is an extremely capable, competitive, talented, intelligent, experience chief executive, and Sun World and Black Diamond are both thrilled that he has stepped in to perform this role."
Mr. Vangelos, who has more than 36 years of management experience and who has served on the Sun World board of managers since October 2006, will replace Bruce Burton, the company's outgoing president and CEO, who had held the positions since July 2005, six months after the acquisition of Sun World by Black Diamond.
Mr. Burton "will remain with the company as a consultant until mid-August to assist in the transition," according to the release.
Mr. Vangelos most recently served as a principal of Novelle Consulting LLC, an international agribusiness consulting firm. Previously he served as president and CEO of Calavo Growers of California for 11 years. He has also been president of international diversified business and fresh marketing for Dole; chairman and CEO of BC Hothouse Foods Inc.; a member of the advisory board of Key & Co., investment bankers for food and agriculture companies; and chairman of the Russian Farm Project, a Minnesota-based, foreign development program to increase the productivity, profitability and quality of life of Russian farmers and rural communities.
Mr. Vangelos received a business administration degree from Washington University and has been active in agribusiness seminars at various universities.
"His reputation in the industry is exceptionally strong," said Mr. Parker. "I have never heard anyone say anything but glowing, positive remarks" about him. "I have had the opportunity to work with him on the board of managers of Sun World for the last year, and he is exceptionally well qualified to take this position."
Mr. Vangelos said in the press release, "On behalf of the board of managers and entire management team, I would like to express our appreciation to Bruce for his efforts on behalf of Sun World. We wish him well in his future endeavors." He added, "I am excited about Sun World's prospects in 2008 and beyond, and look forward to working with the organization to build on recent achievements."
Sun World is involved in varietal research and development and in production, distribution and promotion of fresh produce with integrated agricultural operations in Central and Southern California.
