Melissa's excited about Korean pear program
Korean pears increase in popularity and consumption year after year in the United States, but not every Korean pear is truly sensational. Melissa's/World Variety Produce in Los Angeles runs its supply from November through March each year, and the response from customers is consistently great.
"We offer crisp, sweet, flavorful and larger-sized pears than most," said Robert Schueller, director of public relations for Melissa's. "They are considered a premium variety, and are special not only because of the production process but also because they make a beautiful presentation."
Regarding production, Mr. Schueller said that the pears Melissa's handles are clean and typically blemish-free because of the detailed and labor-intense process. Each pear is carefully wrapped by hand with a protective paper cover while it is still on the tree to prevent damage from wind, rain, sun and other natural causes that result in blemishes and scars. These ideal growing conditions produce a superior tasting, juicy pear that is full of deep, rich flavor.
"Melissa's Korean pears are field-fresh, meaning they are imported fresh from the fields in [South] Korea to us," said Mr. Schueller. "Besides being superior, they could not be any fresher."
