Chilean avocados gain national publicity
Avocado recipes and photos from the Chilean Avocado Importers Association are appearing on television and in the food pages of some of the nation's leading newspapers.
"Mr. Food," a syndicated television program broadcast in more than 150 markets across the United States, featured Chilean Hass avocados in its Oct. 18 episode and will present another segment on the item on Dec. 13. The pair of two-minute segments features footage of Chilean Hass avocado groves as Mr. Food talks about the Chilean season and the availability of Chilean Hass avocados for fall and winter meals.
The host of the show, Art Ginsburg, shows how to prepare an avo-dog (hot dog with avocados), how to pick and prepare avocados and how to make the easy avocado spread -- Chilean avocados mashed in and then piped from a zip-top bag. In both segments, Mr. Food emphasizes the versatility and ease of preparation of Chilean Hass avocados, and the recipes will also be featured on the Mr. Food web site.
"These two shows have given us a great way to reach more than 10,500,000 consumers," Maggie Bezart, CAIA marketing director, said in a press release. "If we were to buy this amount of time on TV, it would cost us well over $200,000. And we know that consumers respond to Mr. Food."
The association is also providing recipes to consumers through the food pages of newspapers. "We recently mailed beautiful photos and easy and impressive recipes to the top newspaper food editors across the country," Ms. Bezart said in the release. "We know that consumers look to newspaper food pages for recipes and meal-planning assistance, and we wanted to be sure they saw Chilean Hass avocados recipes and ideas there."
The recipes, all created especially for the holidays, include mini corncakes with basil avocado spread (an appetizer); avocado quinoa salad (for a pot luck or buffet); and a holiday frittata made with leftover turkey and crowned with avocado slices.
"These two tactics are just part of our integrated communications program for this season," Ms. Bezart added. "We've had special events to Hispanic consumers featuring our spokesperson, Ingrid Hoffmann, Food Network and Univision TV star. We've done exceptional presentations to 100 magazine food editors. We've worked with the American Youth Soccer Organization reaching hundreds of thousands of soccer moms. We're creating complete consumer information and nutrition programs for the registered dietitians of supermarket chains, and we've got even more exciting programs coming to finish out the season."
