Church Bros. and Premium Fresh move forward with working arrangement
SALINAS, CA -- Church Bros. LLC and Premium Fresh, both based here, are working on an agreement that would have Church Bros. handling the sales and marketing of Premium Fresh products, both companies confirmed with The Produce News Nov. 27.
Both Tom Church of Church Bros. and Emmitt Pfost of Premium Fresh said that they hoped a deal would be completed by the end of the Dec. 3 week. Premium Fresh would remain a separate company, responsible for its own profits or losses, and still would have its hand in the selling of its own products.
Mr. Pfost, sales manager of pre-cut for Premium Fresh, and Susan Nunez, a longtime salesperson for Premium Fresh, began operating Monday, Nov. 26, from Church Bros. offices in Salinas. Premium Fresh has cut its overhead with its relocation to Church Bros. headquarters, and Premium Fresh's orders are now being routed through Church Bros., which handles the invoicing. Premium Fresh's business is solely focused on foodservice. Because products all can be listed on one invoice -- under the Church Bros. name -- Premium Fresh could find itself actually doing some selling of Church Bros. products, Mr. Pfost said. He added that Premium Fresh had consolidated its products "in with Church."
Premium Fresh was previously paying for goods and services on a c.o.d. basis, but that linking with Church Bros. alleviates that circumstance and thus helps ease the cash-flow problems that Premium Fresh has been facing, Mr. Pfost said.
The two companies have had a direct relationship with one another since April, when Premium Fresh began leasing space at the Pride of San Juan Cooling facility in San Juan Bautista, CA. True Leaf Farms -- a partnership of Church Bros., Rio Farms and Pride of San Juan principal Stephen Wyrick -- owns Pride of San Juan Cooling.
Mr. Church and Mr. Pfost told The Produce News that both companies have benefited from Premium Fresh leasing space at Pride of San Juan Cooling, which has lowered the overhead for the two companies.
