FFVA?s Dan Botts to serve on specialty crop committee
FFVA Director of Environmental & Pest Management Dan Botts has been named to the National Agricultural Research, Extension, Education & Economics Advisory Board?s Specialty Crop Committee.
The new committee is responsible for studying the scope and effectiveness of research, extension and economic programs affecting the specialty crop industry.
?The committee makes recommendations to USDA on critical agriculture policies, and we are gratified to have someone of Dan?s expertise sitting at the table," said FFVA President Mike Stuart.
The committee was established by Congress under Section 303 of the Specialty Crops Competitiveness Act of 2004, which President Bush signed into law Dec. 21. The legislation was intended to "ensure an abundant and affordable supply of highly nutritious fruits, vegetables and other specialty crops for American consumers and international markets by enhancing the competitiveness of United States-grown specialty crops."
Walter Armbruster of Farm Foundation will chair the committee. Other committee members include Jeffrey Armstrong, dean of the College of Agriculture & Natural Resources at Michigan State University; William J. Lyons Jr., a former California secretary of agriculture; Craig Regelbrugge, senior director of government relations for the American Nursery & Landscape Association; and Philip Nelson, head of the Department of Food Sciences at Purdue University.
