Produce For Kids surpasses million-dollar milestone
Produce for Kids, a Reidsville, GA-based organization that promotes the benefits of healthy eating while raising funds for Children's Miracle Network hospitals nationwide, announced that its 2007 spring campaign has set a new fundraising record of over $415,000, generating more than $1 million in total donations since the program began in 2002.
"Through the increased participation and valued support of the produce industry, which includes our supermarket retailers and sponsors, Produce for Kids is making a real difference, not only in the daily diets of children, but also in the lives of those children who have serious medical needs," John Shuman, president of Shuman Produce Inc. and founder of Produce for Kids, said in a Sept. 5 press release. "Reaching the million-dollar mark is truly remarkable. I am proud of how the produce industry has come together with overwhelming support to this worthwhile campaign. And this is just the beginning, we are eager to keep building on our success going forward."
This national program promotes the importance of adding more fruits and vegetables to children's daily diets while benefiting Children's Miracle Network hospitals serving local communities. Critical to the success of the campaign are the commitment of industry partners and the growing list of participating companies.
Eight retail chains, representing nearly 2,000 stores and 23 states, along with more than 30 sponsors participated in this year's effort. Acme Markets, Giant Food Stores (Carlisle Division), TOPS Markets, Harris Teeter, Kroger (Southwest Division), Meijer, Price Chopper and Publix Super Markets featured sponsored products and organized special events for several weeks.
Sponsors of Produce for Kids include Chelan Fresh, Chiquita, Country Fresh, Country Fresh Mushroom Co., Custom Pak, Del Monte Fresh, Dole Fresh, Driscoll's, Eat Smart, Eurofresh Farms, Everybody's Nuts, Family Tree Farms, Foxy, Fresh Express, Green Giant, Masser, the National Mango Board, NatureSweet, Olivia's Organics, the Oppenheimer Group, Pacific Trellis Fruit, Santa Sweets, Shuman Produce, Stemilt Growers, Summeripe, Superfresh Growers, T. Marzetti and Tropicana.
Produce for Kids implements an all-inclusive integrated marketing campaign, featuring point-of-sale materials along with advertising, public relations and Internet marketing support to promote produce and encourage healthy eating habits. Funds for Children's Miracle Network are generated by all sponsors who pledge a per-unit donation on produce shipped to participating retailers' stores.
