National Steinbeck Center hosts Taste of the Valley event
California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger recently issued a proclamation backing Salute to Agriculture 2007, the three-day series of events that draws attention to the Salinas Valley's agriculture industry.
The Salinas Valley Chamber of Commerce coordinated the series, which ran from Sept. 12 through Sept. 14.
On Sept. 12, Spreckels, CA-based Tanimura & Antle hosted a wine-pairing dinner prepared by Chef Don Ferch that featured wines from the county's newest viticulture area: the San Antonio Valley. On Sept. 13, the chamber presented Joe Pezzini, vice president of operations for Castroville, CA-based Ocean Mist Farms and chairman of the California Leafy Greens Marketing Agreement, with its annual Agricultural Leadership Award at a luncheon at Tanimura & Antle's headquarters.
On Sept. 14, the chamber hosted the Taste of the Valley produce and wine show and Earth to Eats celebrity wine and produce demonstrations at the National Steinbeck Center.
Taste of the Valley featured recipes from the farms and ranches of the Salinas Valley in partnership with local chefs, restaurants and wineries, an exhibit by local panoramic agricultural photographer Kirk Kennedy, and a cake auction from Food Network champion Marina Sousa of Just Cake in Capitola, CA.
This year marked the second year of the Taste of the Valley event. In 2006, Dennis Donohue, mayor of Salinas and president of Salinas-based European Vegetable Specialties Farms Inc., helped the chamber re-invent some Salute to Ag events. Taste of the Valley is one example.
