Vidalia Onion Committee merchandising display contest winners chosen
The Vidalia Onion Committee, based in Vidalia, GA, has selected 10 winning produce managers from U.S. supermarket retail companies in its Sweet Rewards Merchandising Display Contest, which was held from May 1 through June 8.
The winning produce managers and retailers are Eric Dodge from Hy-Vee, Aaron Fleming from Piggly Wiggly Carolina Co., Tony Gilliam from Food City, Timothy Hassler from Ferguson & Hassler Inc., Angela Hopson from Food City, Lannie Kiser from Brookshire Grocery Co., Dee Mabry from Brookshire Grocery Co., Lequitte Perry from KVAT Food Store, Doyle Robinson from Food City, and Lee Rose from Food City. Winners will receive $50 gift cards for each produce department employee.
"We were thoroughly impressed with the original and diverse uses of Vidalia onions in all of the winning entries," Wendy Brannen, executive director of the Vidalia Onion Committee, said in a statement. "It is evident how much time and creativity went into every detail."
Produce departments from almost 50 U.S. conventional retailers, retail wholesalers, mass merchandisers and independent grocers competed to create colorful summer grilling-themed displays featuring Vidalia onions. Photo entries were judged on several criteria, including size and location of display, creative display techniques, cross-merchandising opportunities and the quality of the display.
Creative and cross-merchandising ideas included summertime barbecue displays in the produce department, cross promotions in other supermarket departments and use of in-store point-of-sale materials featuring celebrity chef Jon Ashton to support the Very Vidalia consumer recipe contest.
