Bay Cities Produce receives organic certification
San Leandro, CA-based Bay Cities Produce Co. Inc. recently received organic certification from Agriculture Service Certified Organic.
Bay Cities is the largest exclusive restaurant purveyor in the San Francisco Bay area. The company also services institutions such as clubs, hospitals and cruise ships with a full line of fresh, frozen and prepared fruits and vegetables. Its coverage extends west to the coast, south to San Jose, north to Richmond and east to Livermore.
Bay Cities worked with Agriculture Service Certified Organic certifiers, whose responsibility it was to ensure the validity of organic claims and that Bay Cities' system is designed to avoid any possible cross-contamination with conventional produce, ingredients or cleaning agents.
In early spring, Bay Cities received a certificate denoting a "superior" rating from the American Institute of Baking. In July, it rolled out a mango-papaya salsa that it packs under its own "Bay Cities" label, as well as in private labels. Bay Cities moved into its 55,000-square-foot facility in San Leandro in February 2006 after some 50 years on the Oakland Produce Market. The company is looking to expand soon by 30,000 square feet, said founder Al Del Masso.
"Our business has grown by 300 to 350 percent in the last five or six years," Mr. Del Masso said.
