Ocean Mist launches revamped web site
If any organization was going to throw down the gauntlet of artichoke web site dominance, it's only fitting for it to be the industry leader in artichokes. Ocean Mist Farms has launched a redesigned web site that offers interactive features, easy navigation tools and user-friendly information.
"We started from scratch," said Kori Tuggle, marketing manager for the Castroville, CA-based company, who added that Ocean Mist conducted surveys asking what information consumers would like to see on the site. The newly designed home page features streaming video and an Artichoke Aficionados Club, one of the site's more interactive features.
"There are people [who are] passionate about artichokes," Ms. Tuggle said. The club offers artichoke lovers monthly alerts with new recipes and nutrition information as well as opportunities to win free items.
The new site also features an Ask the R.D. section, where visitors can submit nutrition questions and receive a personalized e-mail response from an Ocean Mist Farms dietician. In addition, the health and nutrition page offers a wealth of information on artichoke nutrition and highlights artichokes as an antioxidant powerhouse.
The site's other features include a recipe database, cooking and instructional videos, and an artichoke store-locator function.
Judging from the experience of the previous site, Ms. Tuggle anticipates that recipes will be a popular element. As overseer of the site, she plans to track recipe interest as well as how people are coming to the site and whether they're coming through a banner ad or some other way.
The new site was designed "with the home cook in mind," Ms. Tuggle said. "When visitors enter the site, they will be able to find all the information they need from recipes to cooking tips and nutrition."
"We've taken on a commitment to keep the information fresh," Ms. Tuggle added. The new site currently has 210 pages of content, dwarfing the firm's previous site.
Ms. Tuggle said that she hopes to continually update the site with a list of links to articles in the media about artichokes. Ocean Mist will add new health information as it becomes available. The web site includes a harvest video on how the company handles artichokes, and there will be additional video segments.
Ocean Mist Farms conducted a survey in 2006 which showed that 70 percent of the people surveyed said they're most likely to look for recipes when they search the web for the word "artichokes."
A high percentage of survey respondents also said they went on-line to find preparation or cooking information as well as health and nutrition information.
To spread the word about the new site, Ocean Mist is including the URL (www. oceanmist.com) on more than 20 million cartons of its products. The company will seek "search engine optimization" so that its web site is readily accessed through a search engine, Ms. Tuggle said.
The new site also features a section for the trade that includes comprehensive information about Ocean Mist's full line of products, growing regions, food- safety program, merchandising programs and instructions for downloading marketing materials.
The site has a career section for those interested in working for Ocean Mist. Prospective employees can click on "About us," then "Careers" and finally "Meet Our People" in the dropdown menus.
