Sun World International names new European licensees
Apofruit Italia Soc. Coop. Agricola in Cesena, Italy, DiDonna Trade S.r.l. in Rutigliano, Italy, and Comercial Frunexa S.L. in Seville, Spain, have been granted approval to market new fruit varieties developed by Sun World International LLC, based in Bakersfield, CA.
The nomination enables the three companies to market fruit from proprietary fruit varieties grown by licensed Sun World producers throughout Europe, according to Sun World Senior Vice President David Marguleas.
DiDonna holds a grape license while Frunexa holds a stone fruit license. Apofruit holds licenses to distribute Sun World stone fruit and grapes.
The new licenses fill in Sun World's European marketer network and supplement the existing European grape marketing license held by Peviani SpA in Milan, Italy. Additional European marketer appointments are pending. "These three companies are leaders in the European fruit industry and enable Sun World to effectively expand its international grape and stone fruit supply platform," Mr. Marguleas said in a statement.
Maurizio Ventura, Sun World's regional licensing manager who is based near Cesena, Italy, will coordinate the company's European producer-marketer relationships and provide key importers and retailers with critical supply information about the Sun World varieties.
In addition to Apofruit and DiDonna, Sun World has appointed grape marketers in Chile (Dole Chile S.A., Unifrutti Traders Ltda., and Cia. Frutera Santa Maria S.A.); in Australia (Perfection Fresh Australia Pty Ltd. and Growers Choice/Vine Fresh Pty Ltd.); in South Africa (Capespan Grapes Pty Ltd., The Grape Co. Pty Ltd. and Dole South Africa Pty Ltd.); in Italy (Peviani SpA); and in Israel (TALI Grapes).
The grapes to be marketed include a wide range of white, red and black seedless varieties developed at Sun World's California-based research and development center. Its new variety development work focuses on a full range of fresh grapes with extraordinary characteristics such as enhanced flavor, distinctive taste, larger berries and clusters, earlier- and later-ripening times and availability, and increased productivity.
