G&G prepares to take over Fleisher units
PHILADELPHIA -- G&G Produce Inc. has placed a deposit to buy the units of the now-defunct Ellis Fleisher Produce Co. on the Philadelphia Regional Produce Terminal, here.
Jimmy Storey, president of the Philadelphia Fresh Food Terminal Corp., told The Produce News July 3 that the market's board planned to convene the second week of July to approve the purchase. "I don't think there will be any problem [with the approval]," Mr. Storey said.
Gary Goldblatt, who currently operates G&G from units 95 and 97 on the market, said July 3 that G&G is already using the Fleisher space in units 91, 93 and 95 for storage. Work to clean and remodel the Fleisher units would begin as soon as the purchase is approved.
G&G handles tomatoes, pineapples, avocados and vegetables. In the short term, the firm will use the Fleisher units for more operating room, but "we have some things brewing to add to our product line for the fall," said Mr. Goldblatt.
Ellis Fleisher, owner of Ellis Fleisher Produce, was long a leader on the Philadelphia Regional Produce Market before his business abruptly closed its doors in April. Industry sources have indicated that Fleisher Produce owes about $400,000 to its market neighbors. An investigation is ongoing, and market sources are withholding comment until that is complete.
