Beloved children's book character headlines latest family 5 A Day retail event
Peter Rabbit is hopping on 5 A Day The Color Way this spring, and he wants children and their families to join him in eating more healthfully.
The beloved Beatrix Potter bunny and his family had kids hopping in the produce aisles over the prospect of eating a colorful variety of fruits and vegetables when they visited Wal-Mart Supercenters and Neighborhood Markets across the country March 12. The "Hop on 5 A Day The Color Way? promotion was sponsored by the nonprofit educational Produce for Better Health Foundation, Wal-Mart and 14 health-minded suppliers.
Families who visited Wal-Mart?s more than 1,700 Supercenters and Neighborhood Markets on the day of the event found store produce departments colorfully outfitted with images of Peter and his family surrounded by fresh fruits and vegetables. Children received a story and activity booklet featuring an original Color Way-themed Peter Rabbit story.
Tired of risking hide and hare with Mr. McGregor, Peter plants his own garden, and he, Mrs. Rabbit, Flopsy, Mopsy, Cotton-tail and Benjamin Bunny soon discover the joys of eating a colorful variety of delicious, nutritious fruits and vegetables for their better health. The activity books include kid-friendly recipes. Parents received PBH?s 5 A Day The Color Way guide, which introduces them to the benefits of choosing a variety of fruits and vegetables from each of the five color groups, and provides other helpful information including a serving size guide.
?Peter?s story, and this fun-filled event, provided a delightful opportunity to educate families about the new Dietary Guidelines for Americans? recommendation to eat more fruits and vegetables than any other food group " about half your plate," PBH President Elizabeth Pivonka said in a statement.
Shoppers also sampled fruits and vegetables from health-minded supplier members of PBH, including apples from Chelan Fresh, pineapple from Dole Food Co., 100 percent cranberry juice by Ocean Spray Cranberries Inc., Peter Rabbit Farms? carrots, oranges from Sunkist Growers, apples from Stemilt Growers, Sun-Maid Growers? raisins, and red seedless grapes from Unifrutti of America Inc. and Del Monte Fresh. Sponsors? products are featured in activity book recipes.
Other sponsors? foods and products featured included Dole 100 percent juice, Marie?s creamy ranch dressing from Dean Foods, and strawberries from the Florida Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services.
The "Hop on 5 A Day The Color Way? promotion is the fourth in a series of quarterly "retailtainment? health events being sponsored by PBH, Wal-Mart and participating suppliers, and implemented by Mars Advertising in Southfield, MI.
December?s "Ogres Eat 5 A Day, Too? put the movie box office-drawing power of everyone?s favorite ogre Shrek and his friends to work to spread the 5 A Day message. Charlie Brown and the Peanuts gang were featured in a Halloween-themed "Treat Yourself to Good Health? event at Wal-Mart stores in October. Last August, Marvel Super Heroes Spider-Man, The Incredible Hulk, Captain America, Storm and Wolverine teamed up as "5 A Day Healthy Heroes? to deliver the message to kids that colorful fruits and vegetables are "cool fuel."
Over 1 million Color Way-themed children?s activity books and 600,000 Color Way guides were handed out during the three events.
