Frieda's launches 'super fruit' line
Los Alamitos, CA-based Frieda's Inc. has launched Super Fruits: Antioxidant Rich Fruits, a new line of sweet superfruits.
The launch has started with one fruit: dried goji berries infused with the sweet flavor of pomegranate. The line eventually will include two or three other products, said Frieda's President Karen Caplan. In mid-summer, Frieda's will enter the next phase of the rollout, she said.
While not in every state, the new line is out nationally. Retailer response to the dried goji berries has been overwhelming, Ms. Caplan said. Frieda's sold out of its initial stock overnight. Since the March launch, Frieda's continues to send samples to interested retailers.
If a healthy snack doesn't taste good, then consumers "won't want to buy it," Ms. Caplan said, noting that the sweetness of pomegranate lends a welcome flavor boost to goji berries.
According to Frieda's press release, goji berries contain 10 times the anti- oxidants of a blueberry, more iron than spinach, more vitamin C than an orange and more beta-carotene than a carrot. They are also rich in vitamins E and B-complex, as well as protein.
Frieda's dried goji berries are packed in cartons of 12 three-ounce bags with a 12-month shelf life.
