Barry Hirsch dies suddenly at age 50
Barry Hirsch, one of the owners of Kleiman & Hochberg Inc., a wholesale produce distributor at the Hunts Point Terminal Market in the Bronx, NY, died Tuesday evening, April 10, after suffering a massive heart attack.
Mr. Hirsch, 50, had been at a local gym and was returning to his home in Old Tappan, NJ, when he felt the onset of chest pains, according to family members. He was taken to nearby Englewood (NJ) Hospital, where he died.
The youngest of three children, Barry Jay Hirsch was born April 28, 1956, in the Bronx, NY, to Helen and Perry Hirsch. He was raised and educated in Yonkers, NY.
He joined K&H in the late 1970s and took an immediate liking to the fast- paced nature of the fresh produce industry. He never lost that feeling for the industry.
"He loved to work. He liked the action. He liked dealing with people," said his older brother, Michael, who is also an owner of the company. Of his outside interests, Michael Hirsch said, "Golf was number one. He also liked to exercise. He liked basketball. He liked baseball. He used to say that he lived 48 hours a day. He said it all the time."
Mr. Hirsch, who was divorced, is survived by his son, Daniel, 19, a freshman at Ithaca College in Ithaca, NY; his daughter Kathryn, 13; his daughter Haley, 12; his brother, Michael of Scarsdale, NY; his sister, Lori DeMarco, who also works at the company, and her husband, Carl, of Rye Brook, NY; and five nephews.
Asked what her brother most enjoyed both inside and outside the business, Ms. DeMarco replied, "He loved working with his brother, with me, with his mother. He just loved seeing us every day."
She added, "He was like a big kid. He loved his kids, his nephews. He loved to watch them play baseball, he loved to watch them play basketball, he loved to watch them play football. That was one of his greatest pleasures -- to watch all those kids."
