Cal Giant promotes family size containers, reduces costs
California Giant has been working with suppliers to develop new packaging options for strawberries to reduce costs and increase efficiencies throughout the distribution system.
The first result of that effort in 2007 for California Giant is a new packaging mix for the popular four-pound clamshells. The four-pounder is an essential part of the overall packaging mix offered by California Giant and is currently shipped in various configurations.
The new master container conforms to the modular five-down footprint and holds three four-pound clamshells. This is an exciting development since the other four-pound master containers in the marketplace are various sizes and not always compatible with the other standard strawberry packaging dimensions, according to a March 22 announcement by California Giant. Many of these containers are unique and utilized only for the four-pound clamshell. This five-down container allows California Giant as a grower- shipper to reduce the number of box sizes it must inventory in its warehouses.
The company is pleased with the added advantage of shipping three four- pound clamshell containers in one corrugated box, resulting in reduced corrugated usage.
When palletized, the new three four-pound containers will hold 330 clams per pallet, compared to the current options available that hold either 224 or up to 324 clams. This conversion in packaging means up to 2,756 additional clamshells per truckload, reducing the freight charge per clamshell.
