SALINAS SCENE: Colorful Harvest rolls out Kid Crunch carrots
Monterey, CA-based Colorful Harvest LLC is rolling out several new carrot products, and the Fresh Produce & Floral Council Expo & Seminars in Anaheim, CA, March 8 provided an opportunity for retailers to get a first look at all the new items.
The products drew excellent response from retailers, said Doug Ranno, partner and chief operating officer for Colorful Harvest. Huell Howser, host of the PBS television show "California?s Gold," took an interest as well, Mr. Ranno said. "California?s Gold? airs on all PBS affiliates in California.
Colorful Harvest?s Kid Crunch " a slender and short orange carrot " is being distributed nationally. The eight-ounce packs will come 48 bags to a case.
?Retailers will be able to market these three for $1 or two for $1," Mr. Ranno said. "It provides kids with a healthy snack alternative."
The company?s crinkle-cut Rainbow Crunch Carrot Chips in an eight-ounce pack come 12 bags to a case. California, Michigan and Philadelphia will be test markets for the carrot chips.
Mr. Ranno said that there has been a lot of demand for Colorful Harvest?s Rainbow Crunch Carrots that feature sweet red, yellow and orange carrots in a two-pound poly bag. That product and Rainbow Crunch Carrot Chips were introduced in October at the Produce Marketing Association?s Fresh Summit 2004 in Anaheim, CA.
The company also is rolling out Rainbow Bunch, with three colors of carrots in a bunch.
Earthbound Farm opens distribution center
San Juan Bautista, CA-based Earthbound Farm has opened a distribution center in Cranbury, NJ.
The facility, which opened the week of Feb. 28, features 32,000 square feet of warehouse storage and includes two off-temperature storage rooms. Earthbound " one of the nation?s leading grower-shippers of organic produce " also is proceeding with plans to open similar facilities serving customers in the Midwest, Southwest and Southeast.
MBITA offers free consulting to COPES participants
Santa Cruz-based Monterey Bay International Trade Association is offering free trade promotion and organic regulatory consulting to California?s organic growers who have participated in conferences or trade missions of the Certified Organic Product Export Strategy program.
COPES is the direct result of a competitive grant from the California Department of Food & Agriculture awarded to the Santa Cruz, CA-based California Certified Organic Farmers, one of the larger organic certification and trade associations in the United States.
CCOF was awarded a two-year grant of more than $450,000 to promote the exporting of California?s organic specialty crops. The money comes from funds sent to California under the farm bill. The grant runs out July 1 and it is unknown whether it will be extended.
CCOF teamed with MBITA to combine their networks and resources to develop and administer the COPES program.
