Floral industry artist Dona Abbott dies
Dona Abbott, a director of Highland Supply Corp. in Highland, IL, and an internationally recognized artist, died March 2 in Boulder, CO, after a five- year battle with cancer. She was 66.
Ms. Abbott, vice president of advertising, worked for Highland Supply Corp. for 37 years handling creative design and advertising. She retired from Highland in 2000.
Born Nov. 18, 1943, in Highland, IL, Ms. Abbott moved with her family to Boulder in 1965. While raising her children, she graduated from the University of Colorado in 1972. She was a long-standing member of Boulder's Mustard Seed Gallery and an active participant in Boulder's Open Studios program. Her work was regularly featured in national art exhibits, including the Rocky Mountain National show, Arts in the Parks and Watercolor West, and has appeared in Splash, International Artist magazine and other art publications. She authored two art books - Watercolor Filled with Bright Colors and Captured Moments.
A celebration of Ms. Abbott's artistic achievements will be held Friday, March 23, from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Foothills Art Center in Golden, CO. An outdoor memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 24, at the Millennium Harvest House in Boulder. Details are available at www.donaabbott.com.
She is survived by her husband, Bill Ervin; her son, Lon Abbott; her daughter, Natasha Scholze; three stepchildren, Zachariah, Jeremy and Sayward Ervin; and nine grandchildren. She is also survived by a brother, Donald Weder, and three sisters, Mary Kay Foley, Wanda Weder and Janet Weder.
The family is establishing the Dona Abbott Endowment for the Arts in her honor. The Dona Weder Abbott Memorial Fund has also been established with the American Floral Endowment. Information on making donations in Ms. Abbott's memory can be found on the web site listed above.
