Oppenheimer strengthens its California grape deal
With the San Joaquin Valley grape season just a few months away, the Vancouver, BC-based Oppenheimer Group has strengthened its link with one of the region's top growers.
Oppenheimer will market a full range of grape varieties produced by Garcia Family Farms Inc. in Arvin, CA, starting in mid-June, according to Josh Leichter, Oppenheimer's grape category director.
"Garcia Family Farms grows excellent-quality grapes," Mr. Leichter said in a press release. "They also produce some of the earliest fruit in the San Joaquin Valley, so we can seamlessly supply our customers as the Mexican grape season wraps up and California begins."
Oppenheimer marketed small volumes of fruit from Garcia Family Farms during the 2006 season with very satisfactory results, according to John Anderson, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Oppenheimer. "We were pleased with the fruit quality and the responsiveness we experienced last year," he said. "We're looking forward to having a very productive partnership and bringing larger volumes of 'Oppenheimer'- branded grapes from this grower to our customers."
Mr. Anderson identified California as an area of opportunity for Oppenheimer, which is well established in the Chilean and Mexican grape deals but has room to grow in the Golden State.
The marketer recently appointed a new grower relations manager, Kip Thompson, to enhance partnerships with Oppenheimer's current California grape growers and seek out strategic relationships with additional producers.
Garcia Family Farms General Manager Mac Cordova, who was an Oppenheimer sales representative for 12 years in the 1980s and '90s, shares Mr. Anderson's enthusiasm about opportunities that lie ahead.
"I have always had a great deal of respect for Oppenheimer and the vision of the company," Mr. Cordova said in the press release. "When I was looking for a partner for Garcia Family Farms, I already had a high level of comfort with Oppenheimer from my own experience."
Oppenheimer will market the full spectrum of popular grape varieties grown by Garcia Family Farms, including Perlettes, Flames, Thompsons, Crimsons, black seedless and Red Globes.
The fruit will be bagged and packed in the standard 19-pound cartons in the "Oppenheimer" brand. Clamshells and other custom packs also will be available.
