S. Katzman Produce expanding in every direction
Now in its fourth generation of family members helping to oversee its operations, S. Katzman Produce Inc., located on the Hunts Point Terminal Market, continues to grow and expand in every possible direction.
In business since the 1920s, S. Katzman services retailers, distributors, caterers, restaurants and gourmet outlets with the full range of both organic and conventional fruits and vegetables.
Stefanie Katzman, one of the fourth generation members, told The Produce News that it handles just about every fresh produce item available, and so its growth focus is in other directions.
“Our growth in expanding our customers base is greatly expanding,” said Katzman. “And we are always looking to improve on our customer service. We have a few exciting projects on the horizon that we know our customers are going to be happy about and want to be included in.”
The company has also expanded greatly at the Hunts Point market. In the past year it acquired several new units; 16 that were previously held by Morris Okun Inc., and an adjacent three that previously housed Alphas Corp. Both companies closed last year.
S. Katzman now has five units on Row A, 25 on Row B and six on Row D.
The most recently acquired units are currently under construction to bring them up to the company’s standards and retrofitted for its needs.
“We are very excited to finish the new units and officially move in to those new stores,” said Katzman. “Our new facility is going to allow us to handle product even better than before and our shippers and customers are going to love it.”
The company continues to be exceptionally strong in its potato and onion programs. Its Costa Rican melon program, which includes watermelons, also continues to be a strong part of S. Katzman’s business.
The company is also growing in stronger with its shipper and customer bases.
“And we are growing our work force,” Katzman added. “We have increased our sales force and management team to keep pace with our growth.”
Katzman is also excited about its current Bloom Fresh rebranding program.
“That’s a nice addition to our other popular brands,” she pointed out. “We are proud to represent some of the best brands in the fresh produce industry.”
