Sun World expands presence with European office
Dozens of new seedless grapes as well as fresh plums, apricots and peaches -- bred by California fruit researchers -- will soon be more readily available to growers and marketers throughout Europe.
In an effort to expand its new fruit variety development and licensing programs, Sun World International LLC has established Sun World Europe, according to Sun World Senior Vice President David Marguleas.
The office will be based in Cesena, Italy, within the important fruit-growing region of Emilia-Romagna.
The new European presence supports and solidifies Sun World's global strategy of aggressively exploiting and protecting its fruit varieties and related intellectual property rights, Mr. Marguleas said.
A newly appointed regional licensing manager, Maurizio Ventura, will manage the European office. Sun World Europe will service the Spanish, Italian and French fruit industries and represents Sun World's fourth international operation. Sun World Mexico was established in the early 1990s, Sun World- South Africa was initiated in early 2001 and Sun World Australasia was launched in 2002.
"Many of our new fruit varieties are well suited for production in Europe, particularly in Italy and Spain," Mr. Marguleas said in a statement. "Our Sugraone ['Superior Seedless' brand] seedless grape is already produced in Europe and its fruit is sold throughout the European continent and the United Kingdom. We have countless other new seedless grapes, as well as distinctive plums, apricots and peaches, that are well-suited for production in Europe's Mediterranean regions and that should enable retailers throughout the European community to more readily access and promote our varieties."
Mr. Marguleas added, "Maurizio Ventura has a strong agricultural and technical background and a keen appreciation for the extra value created from managed varieties. As Sun World strives to expand its varietal portfolio on the European Continent, I am confident that our producer-marketer licensees will benefit from Maurizio's knowledge and local presence."
Mr. Ventura, who will be responsible for all aspects of the company's new variety development and licensing business in Europe, joined Sun World recently after 16 years in Italy's fruit science and nursery industries.
Most recently, Mr. Ventura served as an independent scientific consultant and as a manager at the Italian nursery Vitroplant s.r.l.. He earned undergraduate and doctorate degrees in agricultural science from the University of Bologna and has received numerous scientific awards.
A native of Italy, Mr. Ventura currently resides in Gambettola, Italy with his wife, Silvia, and son, Francesco.
