Fighter pilot Carey Lohrenz addresses Southern Roots
HOLLYWOOD, FL — Fighter pilot Carey Lohrenz, the first female F-14 Tomcat fighter pilot in the U.S. Navy, addressed the Southern Roots luncheon Friday, March 4, during the Southeast Produce Council's Southern Exposure conference and trade show, held here March 3-5.
Southern Roots is the council's leadership program for women, co-chaired by SEPC First Vice President Teri Miller of Delhaize America and Sabrina Pokomandy of Red Sun Farms.
Lohrenz's experience in the "all-male environment of fighter aviation and her ability to pass on the lessons learned in her career allow her to deliver insight and guidance," according to SEPC materials. And as Miller stated in her introduction of Lohrenz, "She knows what it takes to win."
Lohrenz shared some of her life lessons on what it takes to lead a high-powered team. She also described vividly about experiencing 6g force and landing on an aircraft carrier.
She advised attendees to "focus on what matters," adding, "How we respond to adversity matters." She said that "great teams always embody two qualities: belief and trust," and concluded, "Be brave. Take risks. Nothing beats experience."
