Horticulture firm adapts pots to fight Zika virus
As the Zika virus continues to spread and dominate the news, a clever horticulture industry professional has contributed a creative solution to one part of the problem — it turned a plant pot into a mosquito trap. By trapping the Aedes mosquito, the insect responsible for the transmission of the Zika virus, hopefully the number of infected mosquitoes will be diminished.
“We know people love our pots for growing plants and we have also seen them being used as wine coolers,” said the Netherlands-based pot manufacturer Desch Plantpak on its Twitter page. “But now one of our partners has transformed one of our Epla pots into a mosquito trap to battle the Zika virus. We are proud that we can help.”
Desch Plantpak produces flowerpots and containers, transport trays, marketing trays, seed trays, propagation trays and bedding plant packs for growers and the horticultural industry. Its yet unnamed partner is responsible for the novel idea to trap Aedes mosquitoes and to disrupt its reproduction.
