Oppy greenhouse promises colorful spring
Springtime brings abundance to Oppy’s greenhouse category, with production underway in Canada, the United States and Mexico, promising a wide variety of high-quality preferred items and exciting innovations from growers Origin Organic Farms, Divemex and SunSelect.
The popular OriginO line of organic greenhouse items is coming on strong as the BC season gets underway. Long English cucumbers are shipping now, with red, yellow and orange peppers starting before the end of March and beefsteak and grape tomatoes and tomatoes-on-the-vine available in early April.
“Origin Organic Farms was a pioneer in the organic greenhouse industry and their experience shows,” said Aaron Quon, Oppy’s executive category director, greenhouse. “Since they transitioned to 100 percent organic about a decade ago, OriginO has become one of the most highly sought after organic brands, always striving go above and beyond organic standards to grow as sustainably as possible.”
Oppy’s spring portfolio also includes organic sweet bell peppers from leading Mexican greenhouse grower Divemex. Divemex Fair Trade Certified peppers are available through May. The premiums they earn are applied to urgent needs in worker communities, including education and healthcare.
In the coming weeks, Oppy will add SunSelect peppers from BC to its current offerings from the grower’s new facility in Tehachapi, CA.
“The Outrageously Fresh brand will pick up significant traction once SunSelect’s BC production kicks in a few weeks from now, with sweet bell peppers and long English cucumbers shipping from two Lower Mainland locations,” Quon said. Cucumbers grown by Divemex have been marketed in the brand through the winter, with their colorful graphics meeting enthusiasm at retail.
As well, SunSelect recently packed its first mason jar bags of grape, cherry and gourmet medley tomatoes, with mini cucumbers and mini peppers to follow shortly. The new mason jar bags replicate a cookie or snack jar on the kitchen counter, making wholesome, tasty snacks readily accessible to the entire family.
Between Divemex and SunSelect, the Outrageously Fresh brand entails over 900 greenhouse acres, giving it the largest capacity of any privately held greenhouse operation in North America.
