Flavor King enjoys strong citrus season in 2nd year shipping Mexico product
Nogles, AZ — With Florida citrus volume down dramatically this winter, it was a boost to Flavor King Farms’ second season of Mexican citrus shipping from Nogales. The firm will almost double its total volume this year.
Flavor King is a grower, packer, shipper, exporter and distributor of fresh and processed citrus. About 20 to 30 percent of the firm’s fruit is sold on the fresh market. The family operation owns a citrus packinghouse in Hermosillo, Sonora.
Enrique Gracia Parada, president, said that, generally speaking, most of Flavor King’s customers are in the western and central United States. But short supplies in Florida broadened the market this year.
Flavor King has “very strict contracts” with a number of major customers. But for the citrus business, “It’s been a good year weather-wise.” The color and sweetness of Flavor King’s fruit was ahead of its usual seasonal schedule. “The quality is great,” he said.
Flavor King ships Valencia oranges from November into May. The firm is increasing its conventional and organic lemon volume. It is also increasing its organic Dancy Mandarin production.
Flavor King is working with Hermosillo growers to increase lemon plantings to meeting what seems to be perpetually strong demand.
Gracia indicated that limes grow better in the Obregon area, which is 160 miles to the south of Hermosillo.
Gracia’s father, Enrique Gracia Mendivil, is a cattleman in Hermosillo. In the face of poor cattle markets, six years ago he expanded his business to citrus, with that Mexican business named Citrus Game S.A. de C.V.
The Obregon groves are managed by a second son, Pablo Gracia Parada.
This fall Flavor King will begin shipping hard, Italian and grey squash.
