P.D.G. Produce Inc. expanding cold storage
Rio Rico, AZ — March 1 is the move-in date for an additional 22,000 square feet of refrigerated space for P.D.G. Produce Inc. If the schedule holds, this will be two weeks ahead of schedule, according to Paul Guy, who owns the firm.
As The Produce News reported in November, the site is across Rio Rico’s Kipper Street from the firm’s main office and warehouse. The new construction is immediately adjacent to 33,000 square feet of space that is owned by P.D.G. With the new building, the firm will operate a total of 76,000 square feet of refrigeration.
This warehousing adds to Guy’s in-and-out service to other Nogales produce distributors. With the area’s growth, Nogales has a notable refrigerated space shortage.
The vast majority of P.D.G.’s business is serving as a buying broker. “We have a full line of whatever is here” in Nogales. The firm specializes in hothouse peppers and cucumbers, field and Roma tomatoes, as well as zucchini, watermelon and honeydew.
This winter Guy was flying Spanish seedless cucumbers to customers in Los Angeles.
He also imports Dutch vegetables through much of the calendar year. “I have flown vegetables from Holland to Miami. It was cheaper than flying Canadian products to Miami,” he said.
Last year P.D.G. celebrated its 30th anniversary.
