Florida Classic Growers gearing up for first blueberry season
This April, Florida Classic Growers, located in Dundee, FL, will begin moving Florida blueberries into the pipeline. “We’re excited about our new Florida blueberry program,” said President Al Finch. The 2016 deal will begin with select blueberry growers, he explained. Florida Classic anticipates growing its volume for this program in the coming years.
Attendees at Southern Exposure can find out more about this new program by visiting booth No. 811, Finch said.
This April, Florida Classic Growers will add Florida blueberries to its commodity manifest. This season, Florida Classic will pack its blueberries in 4.4- and 6-ounce clamshells as well as a dry pint.
The company’s “ready to eat” peach program, now in its fifth year, continues to grow in popularity. Finch said retailers are able to provide their customers with a peach that’s truly ripe and ready to eat. The deal begins at the end of March and continues to the end of May. According to Finch, the peaches are at its peak in volume availability during the month of April.
“This season, we could ship 2 million pounds of peaches,” Finch noted. Florida peaches have an exclusive window in the marketplace during the month of April.
“We have over 700 acres in membership,” he told The Produce News.
Tree ripened peaches are available in single layer 8-pound trays as well as 20-pound boxes.
Florida Classic will also have Valencia oranges available through the month of May. In June, the company then moves into its Valencia storage program.
