Doeke Faber, past president of AIPH, dies
Doeke Faber, a veteran horticulture lobbyist, died Jan. 4 at the age of 73 after a long battle with cancer, according to a news release. Dr. Faber, from the Netherlands, was former chairman of the Dutch Association of Flower Auctions and received royal recognition at the 2009 VBN congress when Queen Beatrix made him an Officer of the Order of Orange-Nassau, a civil and military Dutch order of chivalry.
Doeke FaberDr. Faber was also president of the International Association of Horticultural Producers from 2003 to 2012 and led the group through a period of significant change both within the global ornamentals industry and the association.
“Doeke Faber used his passion for the horticulture industry and his leadership and diplomatic skills to bring together grower associations from around the world,” said Bernard Oosterom, current AIPH president, in the release. “He was particularly effective at stimulating interest in International Horticultural Exhibitions in Asia and helped in guiding cities in China, Thailand, Chinese Taipei, South Korea and Turkey to produce world-class exhibitions that raised the profile and importance of horticulture in those countries. He worked tirelessly for the greater good of the global industry and earned the respect and gratitude of industry representatives across the globe. He helped to build AIPH into a robust organization and laid foundations that we continue to build on today. AIPH and the industry as a whole will miss him very much and our sympathies are with his wife and family as they deal with this sad time.”
