Oneonta gears up for holiday focus on apples
Oneonta Starr Ranch Growers will start 2016 off in a positive fashion with a host of holiday promotions designed to move apples.
“We will create POS material for Chinese New Year, which begins Feb. 8 — the Year of the Monkey — and POS material for Valentine’s Day focusing on Pink Lady apples,” said National Marketing Representative Dan Wohlford.
“In March, we will have POS material for St. Patrick’s Day focusing on Granny Smith apples,” Wohlford added.
At the current time, Oneonta is still running a full complement of varieties such as Red and Gold Delicious, Granny Smith, Gala, Honeycrisp, Fuji, Braeburn, Pink Lady and Jonagold.
“Typically, we will see 30 percent of our volume sold during the winter months,” Wohlford told The Produce News.
“The fourth quarter of 2015, October through December, saw stronger than normal sales for Oneonta,” he continued. “So we anticipate that to carry through into the winter selling period. Our export volume usually runs 30-35 percent of our domestic volume. The winter months are usually a busy time for us export-wise.”
