NEW launched for Philadelphia food industry women
PHILADELPHIA -- Produce industry women in the Philadelphia area are being encouraged to join a "NEW" organization, that is, the Network of Executive Women, which involves women from the food and retail business sectors.
The Greater Philadelphia Area Network of Executive Women held its first meeting Nov. 15 in Philadelphia. Total participation was about 250, including a dozen or so men. A handful of women with ties to the produce industry was present, with one being a key figure in the meeting.
The concept for the group was formed in 2003, but Bobbie O'Hare formed the first NEW chapter in New England in 2003. Ms. O'Hare is vice president of business development for Johnson, O'Hare Co. in Billerica, MA. There are now 10 NEW chapters around the country.
Three women who are part of the Johnson, O'Hare food brokerage business via JO'H Produce PA in Conshohocken, PA, are actively involved in the Philadelphia chapter. JO'H Produce PA account executive Linda Gilroy is on the NEW Philadelphia steering committee. Terri Lowden, who heads the Conshohocken office, is also active, as is her co-worker, Sandi Muller.
Among those attending the first Philadelphia meeting was Rita Neczypor, director of purchasing for Procacci Bros./Garden State Farms, here.
The keynote speaker of the meeting was Denise Morrison, president of Campbell USA in Camden, NJ. Ms. Morrison told the story of establishing an early goal for herself of becoming chief executive officer of a Fortune 500 company. She set a plan to reach that goal, including all the components of professional experience required to successfully realize that goal and accomplished it.
Another dynamic speaker was Judy Spires, president of Acme Markets in Philadelphia, a division of Supervalu.
