E. coli outbreak prompts Taylor Farms recall
Taylor Farms Pacific Inc. of Tracy, CA, has issued a recall of several products because they may include celery that could contain E. coli 0157:H7. The company's celery and onion diced blend tested positive for E. coli and was used in the Costco Rotisserie Chicken Salad that has been linked to a multi-state outbreak.
As of Nov. 23, 19 people infected with the outbreak strain have been reported from seven states. The majority of illnesses have been reported from states in the western United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention. Five ill people have been hospitalized, and two have developed hemolytic uremic syndrome, a type of kidney failure. No deaths have been reported.
In addition to Costco, the recalled products were sold to Raleys, Albertsons, Safeway, Savemart, Vons, Target, Walmart, Sams Club, Starbucks, 7-Eleven, King Sooper, Pantry and Tonys. States affected by the recall are Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.
Although most healthy adults can recover completely from E. coli 0157:H7 within a week, some people can develop a form of kidney failure that can lead to serious kidney damage and even death.
