Fall demand strong for O.C. Schulz
Demand for red potatoes this fall was almost exceeding supply for O.C. Schulz & Sons Inc., according to Andy Moquist, a salesman for the Crystal, ND-based firm.
David and Andrew Moquist of O.C. Schulz & Sons Inc. in Crystal, ND.“Pricing could be better for the farming side,” Moquist added. “Prices are low, which is good for promotion, but it’s not a lot of money.”
Consistent with other sources in the Red River Valley, O.C. Schulz is experiencing a high grade out. “We had growth cracks due to the growing season,” Moquist said. The grade out this season is 10 to 20 percent greater than normal, which makes the culls for some lots as high as 20 to 40 percent of the total. “Not every lot will be that way,” he said, “but it is limiting the amount that can be shipped up here.”
Because of this, a record gross volume for the season may match the total volume shipped in 2014. Last year set a record high for Red River Valley red potato yields. That production volume was surpassed in 2015, according to the Northern Plains Potato Growers Association.
