Concurring with many other produce professionals, Jim DiMenna, president of Red Sun Farms, headquartered in Kingsville, Ontario, said the location and timing of the New York Produce Show is attractive to both vendors and buyers.
“The holidays in New York are a great incentive for attendees,” said DiMenna. “The show is unique to our industry and it provides us with an intimate setting to connect with new and current partners.”
Red Sun Farms will exhibit at booth No.130 at the event. The company, DiMenna noted, has been highly pleased with the success of its new sustainable organic grape tomato packaging.
Red Sun Farms’ organic grape tomatoes.“The pack style has received overwhelmingly positive reactions from organic category specialists,” he said. “It was named a finalist in the 2015 Fresh Summit PMA Impact Award for Innovative Packaging.”
The packaging boasts a fully compostable, recyclable and biodegradable base, and a top seal lidding film that uses a 90 percent reduction on plastic. The base is made of a blend of only North American sourced virgin and recycled wood pulp.
“The package has attracted attention since its launch,” DiMenna noted. “The fiber base is certified compostable to BPI standards. This new organic packaging look satisfies not only consumer’s organic desires, but also their awareness of the need for less plastic, reduced landfill waste, Increased use of renewable resources and local production vs. off shore.”
Red Sun Farms has grown exponentially in the past several years.
The vertically integrated hydroponic greenhouse producer now has facilities across North America. Its line of hydroponic and organic vegetables includes tomatoes, seedless cucumbers, bell peppers, and eggplants. The company oversees seed selection and propagation, manages growing and harvesting techniques, and controls sales and distribution.
It was the first greenhouse company to own and operate farms in all three North American free trade countries; Canada, the United States, and Mexico. It currently operates three greenhouses and seven customer service and distribution facilities.
“We have broken ground on the expansion of our head office in Kingsville,” said DiMenna. “This is needed to accommodate upcoming team member additions and update our current space.”
Red Sun Farms is also in the midst of a couple of exciting consumer contests — a Healthy Tailgate and a Grocery Card Giveaway.
