Riveridge’s Armock pleased with Michigan apple deal
“Ideal weather this fall” in Michigan set up a strong apple harvest season. “Bright, clear sunshiny days and cool nights” were great for timely apple color. Don Armock, the owner of Riveridge Produce Marketing Inc., based in Sparta, MI, said Oct. 16 that some growers were at the end of their picking season. Riveridge would finish its harvest at the end of October.
“We have had no frost yet, which is a little unusual,” Armock noted. “Our shipping volume year to date is a little ahead” of 2014 levels. “Demand has been very good.” But he said the industry “is selling like it is a bigger crop than it is. Red Delicious and Golden Delicious are probably underpriced.” Asked if he had a grand scheme to hold back fruit, Armock replied, “We will sell when the customers want to buy.” But, he added, “I am not anxious about storability. If it takes until mid-summer to sell the crop, so be it. I would prefer not to be done early. We have longstanding relationships with customers who want to maintain supplies. Overall it’s going really well.”
“We had a little bigger Gala crop and a little bigger Fuji crop this year vs. last. We’re off a little this year on Red Delicious.
“We have mixed sizing,“ he continued. “On some crops we’re a little light.” Generally speaking for Riveridge, Fujis, Galas and Red Delicious “have medium to good sizing, depending on the block. Honeycrisp has real large fruit size. It’s larger than what we’d like.”
Another difference this year is that that percentage of packout in grading isn’t as high as it was in 2014. While the overall crop in 2015 was larger, the production after packout will result in a similar volume to last year. The packout “varies with variety and location and from grower to grower, he said. “The Golden Delicious packout is much shorter. It is not as good for us. Honeycrisp has more bitter pit” than a year ago.
