Pride of New York Harvest Week at Wal-Mart
Pride of New York Harvest Week at Wal-Mart
The Pride of New York program and Wal-Mart stores throughout New York state are celebrating the bounty of the harvest season with a weeklong showcase of produce grown in New York. From Nov. 7 to 13, 39 Wal-Mart stores across the state will highlight and promote New York-grown produce items with Pride of New York in-store signage.
New York state Agriculture Commissioner Patrick H. Brennan said in a statement, "New York farmers produce a wide assortment of fresh fruits and vegetables and they're all in for the final harvest of the season. We are pleased that Wal-Mart is using the Pride of New York to help showcase our local harvest in 39 of their stores across the state. Whether shopping at Wal- Mart or any other retail food venue, ask for the Pride of New York and be confident that your food is fresh, local and your purchases are supporting local farmers."
Pride of New York is the state's marketing and promotion program that identifies and generates demand for New York food and agricultural products, with the program's emblem noting "Our Pride is Inside."
Among the items that will bear the Pride of New York signage in Wal-Mart produce departments are New York potatoes supplied by Isadore A. Rapasadi & Sons in Canastota (Madison County) and Bushwick Commission in Farmingdale (Nassau County); apples supplied by Fix Farms in Hudson (Columbia County) and New York Apple Sales in Castleton (Rensselaer County); cabbage supplied by Torrey Farms in Elba (Orleans County); and squash supplied by Turek Farms/Cayuga Produce in King Ferry (Cayuga County).
Celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2006, the Pride of New York program has been successful in linking farmers and food producers with retail outlets, wineries, chefs, restaurants, foodservice organizations, agri-tourism initiatives and trade associations that support New York agriculture.
In addition to helping consumers find New York food, the program assists farmers and food processors in branding their products by using the Pride of New York emblem, and encourages retailers and restaurants to highlight the New York products they use and sell by displaying the emblem.
