Three new poinsettias may help extend traditional season for the holiday plant
Three new poinsettia offerings developed by Ecke Ranch and available in 2015 may inspire new uses of poinsettias during the holidays and help extend the traditional poinsettia season.
Autumn Leaves is a warm-colored, peachy yellow and it resembles what its name implies. It has speckled bracts and is perfect for early fall sales.
Peppermint Ruffles has a speckled pattern reminiscent of crushed candy canes and is ideal for pre-Thanksgiving sales.
Jingle Bell Rock has red and white bi-color bracts with deep green foliage and could prove to be a popular mid-season choice.
According to the 2014 Poinsettia Survey by Greenhouse Grower magazine, poinsettia sales were very strong last year. Novelties, such as marble varieties and glitter-covered poinsettias, sold out early; red remained the best-selling color; and white extended the season into the new year.
Since some growers got out of the poinsettia game in favor of other crops, there was reduced market saturation in 2014 and this increased both demand and profitability for the remaining poinsettia producers. With the new color offerings this year, growers and retailers are hoping for another successful season in 2015.
