Halloween spending by the numbers
According to the 2014 Halloween survey from the National Retail Federation, over 25 percent of consumers turn to supermarkets for Halloween-related purchases, totaling more than $1.8 billion in sales. And 162 million people in America are expected to celebrate Halloween this year, spending an average of $78 each, with costumes being the top spending category, followed closely by decorations, candy and greeting cards.
Consumers between the ages of 18-24 are the most active Halloween participants at 86 percent, followed by ages 25-34 at 84 percent, ages 35-44 at 79 percent, ages 45-54 at 63 percent, ages 55-64 at 51 percent and ages 65-plus at 40 percent. Most adults plan to hand out candy, decorate their homes and yards, carve a pumpkin, and throw or attend a party.
Florists responding to SuperFloral magazine’s survey reported that their top-selling Halloween 2014 items were ready-made bouquets, followed by arrangements and balloons, with 27 percent of customers spending over $40. However, less than half of florists surveyed reported Halloween to be a significant holiday for their departments.
