Minnesota lily society hosts Land of 10,000 Lilies show and fall bulb sale
MINNEAPOLIS — The North Star Lily Society held its 46th annual lily show, Land of 10,000 Lilies at Bachman’s Heritage room, here, and it was a lily lover’s paradise, featuring Asiatic, martagon, oriental, trumpet, species and interdivisional lilies exhibited by lily growers in Minnesota. The “10,000 lilies” in the show’s title refers both to the Land of 10,000 Lakes and the more than 10,000 hybrid lilies that have been named and registered with the Royal Horticultural Society in England.
It was a lily lover’s paradise at the North Star Lily Society’s annual lily show at Bachman’s in Minneapolis.Over 200 of those lilies were hybridized and registered by Minnesotans. “This year was a really successful show, with a bus tour from southern Minnesota and a record number of visitors for the two days of the show,” Peggy Nerdahl, chairman of the organization’s publicity committee, told The Produce News. “This year there were many first-time attendees, including a couple from northern Minnesota who were so excited about growing lilies and finding a group of like interest. It’s fun to meet people who never knew about North Star Lily Society before happening upon the show.”
The North Star Lily Society’s mission is to educate its members and the public in the culture and growing of lilies and to promote the genus lilium in the upper Midwest area. It is a regional affiliate of the Northern American Lily Society and has an active membership that hosts free educational events in November and March, bulb sales in October and April, and a free annual lily show.
“Our fall bulb sale on Oct. 10 at Bachman’s features the shade-tolerant, sought-after martagon lily bulbs and our Minnesota Heritage lilies, plus many more,” said Nerdahl. “The Minnesota lilies were hybridized and registered by well-known hybridizers like Hugh and Ruth Cocker, Julius Wadekamper and Hartle/Gilman gardens and many others.”
Bulb sale earnings help support the educational speaker events, the lily show and the maintenance of the organization’s Heritage lily garden at Arneson Acres in Edina, MN. For more information, visit www.northstarlilysociety.com.
