Harris Teeter, Titan Farms join to donate 34,000 pounds of peaches to help feed hungry people
Harris Teeter Supermarkets Inc. and Titan Farms in Ridge Spring, SC, have donated more than 34,000 pounds of peaches to North Carolina food banks to help feed the hungry in local communities.
Harris Teeter, a subsidiary of The Kroger Co. based in Matthews, NC, operates 235 stores in North Carolina, South Carolina, five other states and the District of Columbia. Titan Farms is a leading East Coast peach grower located in Ridge Spring, SC.
Titan Farms peaches, sold in 2.25-pound baskets, as pictured here, were displayed in Harris Teeter stores throughout North Carolina this summer. Harris Teeter and Titan Farms donated a percentage of all peaches sold, amounting to 34,000 pounds of peaches, to food banks to help feed hungry people in North Carolina.
Titan Farms made the donation through its Peaches with a Purpose program to help feed the under-served while bringing attention to the problem of food insecurity. The program, now in its third year, took place in August throughout all North Carolina Harris Teeter locations. Harris Teeter and Titan donated a percentage of all peaches purchased to Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina in Winston-Salem and Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina in Charlotte. The food banks began distributing peaches to schools and others on Aug. 28.
“On behalf of the hundreds of thousands of children, seniors and families who struggle daily with hunger in our region, we want to thank Harris Teeter and Titan Farms for their commitment to help end hunger,” Kay Carter, chief executive officer of Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina, said in a statement. “Produce is an item that those living in poverty can least afford but need as part of a healthy diet. We are very grateful for this support.”
Metrolina serves 19 counties and provides food for almost 650 partner agencies, including soup kitchens, emergency pantries, residential care facilities, homeless shelters, senior programs and child care programs for low-income children. Last year, it distributed 45 million pounds of food and other essential grocery products.
Danna Robinson, communication manager for Harris Teeter, thanked Titan Farms for partnering with it for the third year of the program.
“Fresh produce is scarce in food banks across the country, and we are happy to be able to contribute nutritious items to those in need,” she said in a statement.
“We really appreciate having Harris Teeter as a partner in the fight against hunger,” said Chalmers Carr, president of Titan Farms, who noted that Salem Produce helped transport the donated product.
