The “KORU” brand Plumac C.V. is New York Apple Sales Inc.’s newest offering.
The apple was discovered in New Zealand about 20 years ago. The company has been licensed by the owner of the intellectual property, or apple cultivar, to grow and sell the apple in the United States.
Kaari Stannard, owner and president of New York Apple Sales, headquartered in Castleton, NY, said the company is currently selling imported “KORU” brand Plumac C.V. apples from New Zealand.
New York Apple Sales’ new ‘KORU’ brand Plumac C.V. pouch bag. “Our domestic plantings should start production in a couple of years,” explained Stannard. “We will be growing this apple on our expanding Fish Creek Farm Orchard in Western New York, as well as on several other licensed orchards in New York. ‘KORU’ is a licensed variety.”
She added that the “KORU” variety has been well received by retailers and consumers alike.
The company sells its apples predominantly under the “New York Apple Sales” brand name.
Stannard noted that its customers are primarily retailers and wholesalers in the Eastern half of the United States. “We provide apples to regional chains and National retailers within this geography,” she explained.
“Our crop in the various growing regions where we have grower partners — in Lower and Upper Hudson Valley, as well as western New York — have a good crop this year. It is similar in volume to last years’ crop.”
She added that harvesting will be on normal timing this year.
“Normal harvest timing with the Ginger Gold variety commences in the Hudson Valley next week [Aug. 10],” said Stannard. “We anticipate finishing harvest in late October or early November in our growing regions.”
