Nunes issues lettuce update
The Nunes Co. Inc. announced in an Oct. 9 statement that it has voluntarily recalled its "green leaf lettuce" sold under the "Foxy" brand harvested from one farm, shipped from Tuesday, Oct. 3 through Friday, Oct. 6.
This recall does not involve Iceberg lettuce or Romaine lettuce.
As of this statement, over 97 percent of the affected cartons have been located, and have either been destroyed or have been set aside for destruction. Only about 250 cartons could have reached consumers out of 8,533 cut from this farm, it added, and the company continues to identify the location of these cartons, and expects to reduce this further.
The 250 cartons could only be in the western states of Arizona, California, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and Nevada, the company stated, emphasizing that no illnesses have been reported.
This recall is a precautionary measure based upon our concern for our customers, and a concern about the product, the statement read. The recall was initiated when it was discovered that water used to irrigate the product may have been contaminated with E. coli. Subsequent investigation indicated that the problems were caused by use of a secondary water source, initially testing positive for E. coli.
No other shippers or brands are part of this recall. No other products of The Nunes Co. or Foxy brand products except "green leaf lettuce" are part of this recall.
The company emphasized that it is reacting to a water test only, and samples of the recalled product are now being tested.
