Nunes issues lettuce recall
Although there have been no reports of any illnesses, The Nunes Co. has voluntarily recalled some lettuce over concerns about E. coli contamination.
Company executives ordered the recall after learning that irrigation water may have been contaminated with E. coli, according to company President Tom Nunes Jr., who noted that the company has not found E. coli bacteria in the lettuce itself.
"We're just reacting to a water test only," Mr. Nunes was quoted as saying in an article in The New York Times of Oct. 9. We know theres generic E. coli on it, but were not sure what that means.
The recall covers green leaf lettuce sold in grocery stores from Oct. 3 to Oct. 6 in seven Western states: Arizona, California, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon and Washington. The lettuce was also sold to distributors in those states which may have sold it to restaurants or institutions, the article noted. The lettuce was packages as Green Lead 24 Count, waxed carton and Green Lead 18 Count, cellophane sleeve, returnable carton. Packaging is stamped with the lot code 6SL0024.
Mr. Nunes said in the article that the bacteria in the lettuce fields probably did not share the source of the E. coli found recently in spinach.
