Buurma’s Michigan deal looking good for summer
Michigan’s vegetable crops were benefiting from ideal growing conditions in mid-June, and the outlook for the summer shipping was bright, according to Loren Buurma, a partner in the Willard, OH-based Buurma Farms Inc.
With good weather, Michigan started four days earlier than normal this spring, Buurma indicated on June 10. “We had timely rains and things look great. We hope that continues.”
Buurma began harvesting radishes on May 27. Turnip and mustard greens, as well as cilantro and dill, were being shipped when Buurma spoke with The Produce News. “Our celery transplants are out,” Buurma said. Good moisture was supporting those transplants. The celery harvest is expected in late July.
“Next week we’ll be shipping collard, kale and curly and flat parsley,” he continued. ”We have beets in a couple of weeks. Things are looking really good.”
In late June, bunch and bulk beets would be shipped.
Buurma noted that his family’s Ohio farms are also enjoying a “good” spring. “We are on schedule and it’s a normal year” in Ohio.
Buurma Farms constantly upgrades its food-safety operations, “but we have no major projects in Michigan this year,” Buurma said.
